Daily News Wrap-Up: India’s Transmission Plan Faces Execution Test

India’s transmission infrastructure comprised approximately 509,603 circuit kilometers of transmission lines and 1,478 gigavolt-amperes of transformation capacity as of June 2026, according to Mercom India Research’s State of Transmission Infrastructure in India report. India’s transmission network has grown significantly over the past decade, with transmission line length increasing by 50.8% and transformation capacity more than doubling, rising 111.7% between April 2016 and June 2026.

MERC Allows Net Metering with Open Access for Rooftop Solar Project

The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has partly allowed a private company’s petition seeking net metering arrangements for its 660 kW rooftop solar power project while availing green energy open access. The Commission directed the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL) to reconcile the petitioner’s, GKN Driveline (GKNDIL), billing from November 10, 2023, until the month preceding the billing cycle from which the net metering benefits were extended. Any excess amount recovered must be adjusted or refunded to GKNDIL with applicable interest.
