In an interview on the sidelines of the Mercom India Renewables Summit 2026, held in New Delhi on July 1 and 2, Harsh Vardhan Govil, Chief Operating Officer at SAEL, discussed the challenges facing India’s solar manufacturing industry. He spoke about the shortage of domestically manufactured solar cells following the implementation of ALMM List-II, the hurdles expected in developing ingot and wafer manufacturing capacity, and why consolidation in the solar manufacturing sector is inevitable. He added that Indian module manufacturers are increasingly expanding beyond manufacturing to offer engineering, procurement, and construction services and serve as manufacturing partners for overseas customers, strengthening their value proposition in export markets.
