					</table><p>Austria-based international technology group <a href="https://www.andritz.com/group-en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ANDRITZ</a> has secured an order to equip Gujarat-based <a href="https://www.torrentpower.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Torrent Power</a>’s 3,000 MW Saidongar-1 pumped storage project (PSP) in Karjat, Maharashtra, with pump-turbines, motor-generators, and other electromechanical equipment.</p>
<p>The storage project will produce 6,241 GWh of energy annually.</p>
<p>ANDRITZ did not disclose the contract value but said it was in the low-three-digit-million-euro range.</p>
<p>The company must design, manufacture, install, test, and commission ten reversible pump turbines, motor-generators, and related electromechanical equipment. The project will be executed using ANDRITZ’s manufacturing facilities in India.</p>
<p>ANDRITZ is currently involved in seven PSPs in India with a combined installed capacity exceeding 11 GW.</p>
<p>This March, ANDRITZ <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/andritz-wins-order-for-tata-powers-1-gw-bhivpuri-pumped-storage-project" target="_blank" rel="noopener">secured</a> an order from Tata Power to supply key equipment for the 1,000-MW Bhivpuri PSP in Maharashtra.</p>
<p>Last September, ANDRITZ <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/andritz-bags-order-from-adani-green-for-1-8-gw-pumped-storage-project" target="_blank" rel="noopener">received</a> an order from Adani Green Energy for the 1,800 MW Gandikota PSP in the YSR Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh.</p>
<p>It also <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/andritz-bags-order-adani-green-pumped-storage" target="_blank" rel="noopener">secured</a> an order from Adani Green Energy to supply pump turbines, motor generators, and other electromechanical equipment for the 1,500 MW Tarali PSP in Satara, Maharashtra.</p>
<p>Last April, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/cea-approves-detailed-project-reports-for-7-5-gw-pumped-storage-projects" target="_blank" rel="noopener">approved</a> the detailed project reports for six PSPs, including the Bhivpuri project, with a total capacity of 7.5 GW.</p>
<p>India’s total <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/cea-highlights-pumped-storage-as-base-load-to-address-peak-power-demand" target="_blank" rel="noopener">installed</a> PSP capacity is expected to reach approximately 87 GW by 2033-34, according to the CEA’s Roadmap to 100 GW of Hydro Pumped Storage Projects by 2035-36. The report said India’s resource adequacy studies highlight increasing requirements for long-duration energy storage. It stated that while battery energy storage systems are effective for short-duration applications, pumped storage is critical for meeting evening peaks and extended periods of high demand.</p>
<p>India’s growing need for energy storage has been outlined in the National Electricity Plan 2023, which projects a requirement of around 74 GW and 411 GWh of storage capacity by 2031-32. Of this, approximately 27 GW and 175 GWh are expected to come from PSPs.</p>
<p>In response to this growing demand, the Ministry of Power <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/guidelines-pumped-storage-projects/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">issued</a> tariff-based competitive bidding guidelines earlier this year to facilitate the procurement of stored energy from PSPs, including those that are existing, under construction, or in the planning phase.</p>

<p>ANDRITZ will supply reversible pump turbines, motor-generators, and related electromechanical equipment.</p>
<p>The value of the order has not been disclosed.</p>
<p>This is the third contract awarded to ANDRITZ by Adani Green, following the <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/andritz-bags-order-adani-green-pumped-storage" target="_blank" rel="noopener">order</a> of the 1,500 MW Tarali project earlier this year, and the award of the 500 MW Chitravathi project in 2023..</p>
<p>ANDRITZ’s scope for the Gandikota project includes the design, manufacture, installation, testing, and commissioning of the pumped storage units and the associated auxiliaries. The project will be executed using ANDRITZ’s manufacturing facilities in India and supported by its global network.</p>
<p>ANDRITZ provides advanced plants, equipment, services, and digital solutions for a wide range of industries.</p>
<p>Adani Green has an installed capacity of 500 MW of PSP projects and plans to expand the portfolio to over 5 GW by 2030.</p>
<p>In February 2025, Adani Green <a href="https://mercomindia.com/adani-green-1250-mw-pumped-storage-uppcl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">received</a> a letter of award from the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation for the 1,250 MW Panaura PSP. The project is expected to be completed within the next six years.</p>
<p>In a bid to <a href="https://mercomindia.com/regulators-propose-exempting-psps-from-electricity-duty-ists-charges" target="_blank" rel="noopener">encourage</a> PSP projects, the Forum of Regulators recommended exempting electricity duty and cess on input energy for pumping to reduce costs. Input energy for pumping in PSPs should not be treated as ‘consumption,’ and therefore, electricity duty should not be levied on these projects, it said.</p>
<p>According to data from the Central Electricity Authority, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, and Mercom’s India Solar Project Tracker, India made substantial pumped storage capacity <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/renewable-energy-capacity-in-indias-power-mix-reaches-48-3-in-q2-2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">additions</a> with THDC’s Tehri PSP Unit-1 (250 MW) and Greenko’s Pinnapuram HPS Units 1–5 (5*240 MW), contributing an additional 1,200 MW of pumped hydro capacity in the second quarter of 2025.</p>

<p>This is the second collaboration between ANDRITZ and Adani Green Energy, following the 2023 contract for the 500 MW Chitravathi PSP.</p>
<p>ANDRITZ Hydropower is a global supplier of electromechanical systems and services for hydropower projects. Its 489 GW portfolio ranges from small hydropower solutions to large-scale installations.</p>
<p>Adani Green is also working on other PSPs, including a 500 MW project on the Chitravathi River in Andhra Pradesh and a 1,800 MW project at Gandikota in Andhra Pradesh.</p>

<p>To further support this push toward hydropower and pumped storage, the Ministry <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/pumped-storage-projects-to-receive-up-to-%E2%82%B920-million-mw-budgetary-support/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">revised</a> its budgetary support, allocating a total of ₹124.6 billion (~$1.48 billion). The plan covers hydroelectric projects totaling 31 GW, including 15 GW of PSP capacity, to be implemented between the financial years 2024-25 and 2031-32.</p>
<p>Budgetary assistance has been structured based on project size, with support capped at ₹10 million (~$119,126)/MW for projects up to 200 MW and ₹2 billion (~$23.81 million) plus ₹7.5 million (~$89,345)/MW for projects exceeding 200 MW. In exceptional cases, this support could increase to ₹15 million (~$178,676)/MW.</p>
