					</table><p>A new building code <a href="https://mercomindia.com/bees-new-building-code-could-boost-solar-adoption-in-commercial-buildings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rolled</a> out by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) to improve energy efficiency in commercial buildings and office spaces could drive renewable energy adoption, provided states incorporate it into local building bylaws. The BEE has issued the Energy Conservation and Sustainable Building Code 2024, which establishes standards to enhance energy efficiency in commercial and office buildings. A key feature of the code is its emphasis on enabling solar integration at the design stage, encouraging developers to account for renewable energy systems early in project planning.</p>
<p>The Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/uttar-pradesh-regulator-approves-tariff-for-nrels-400-mw-solar-project" target="_blank" rel="noopener">approved</a> a tariff of ₹2.56 (~$0.028)/kWh for NTPC Renewable Energy’s 400 MW solar project. The Commission also approved the power purchase agreement executed between Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation and NREL for the supply of power for 25 years.</p>
<p>India must <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/dispatchable-power-key-to-support-industrialization-economic-survey" target="_blank" rel="noopener">approach</a> the coming decade not as a climate policy problem in isolation, but as a broader energy system strategy that sequences the transition in line with growth, security, and institutional preparedness, according to the Economic Survey 2025-26 tabled in Parliament by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Renewable energy will play a major and growing role in sustained growth and living standards. However, capacity additions alone do not automatically translate into a dependable supply, particularly at non-solar peak times or during periods of high variability.</p>
<p>India’s total <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/cea-highlights-pumped-storage-as-base-load-to-address-peak-power-demand" target="_blank" rel="noopener">installed</a> pumped storage project (PSP) capacity is expected to reach approximately 87 GW by 2033-34, according to the Central Electricity Authority’s (CEA) Roadmap to 100 GW of Hydro Pumped Storage Projects by 2035-36. The average annual capacity addition is projected to be 9 GW, resulting in total installed capacity exceeding 100 GW by 2035-36. However, the roadmap stated that PSP commissioning may accelerate in later years as projects’ potential increases, particularly for off-stream closed-loop projects with approximately four years of gestation.</p>
<p>Mumbai-based solar glass manufacturer Borosil Renewables <a href="https://mercomindia.com/borosil-renewables-posts-profit-of-%E2%82%B91-billion-in-q3-fy-2026-after-prior-year-loss" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> a revenue of ₹3.9 billion (~$42.45 million) for the third quarter (Q3) of the financial year (FY) 2026, compared to ₹3.61 billion (~$39.31 million), a year-over-year (YoY) growth of 8%. The company reported revenue of ₹3.66 billion (~$39.85 million) within India and ₹250 million (~$2.72 million) from businesses outside India. The company posted a profit of ₹1 billion (~$10.89 million), against a loss of ₹300 million (~$3.27 million) during the same period last year.</p>
<p>U.S.-based solar tracker firm Nextpower <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/solar-tracker-company-nextpowers-revenue-rose-34-yoy-in-q3-fy-2026" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> revenue of $909 million for Q3 of the FY 2026, a 34% YoY increase from $679 million. The revenue exceeded analysts’ expectations by $93.49 million. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization totaled $214 million, up 15.1% from $186 million in the same quarter of the previous year. Net profit grew 12% YoY to $131 million from $117 million in Q3 FY 2025.</p>
<p>China <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/strong-solar-buildout-pushes-chinas-power-capacity-to-3890-gw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">added</a> 311 GW of solar and 119 GW of wind power capacity in 2025, according to data released by the National Energy Administration. These additions were the highest on record. In all, China installed an additional 543 GW of new energy capacity from both conventional and renewable sources during the year, a 16.1% YoY increase. Coal and gas-based power capacity rose by 93 GW. The total installed capacity from all sources was 3,890 GW at the end of 2025. Cumulative solar capacity reached 1,200 GW, up 35.4% YoY, and wind 640 GW, rising 22.9% YoY.</p>


Daily News Wrap-Up: New BEE Code Can Speed Up Solar in Commercial Buildings

<p>The Delhi government has released its draft Delhi Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) 2018. The draft ECBC aims to create minimum requirements for the energy-efficient design and construction of commercial buildings in the national capital.</p>
<p>The draft code is open for comments and suggestions.</p>
<p>In the draft code, the government stresses the importance of installing renewable energy generation, mainly rooftop solar, on commercial buildings across the city.</p>
<p>The proposed code calls for all commercial buildings to adhere to the necessary provisions for the installation of renewable energy systems either on rooftops or elsewhere at the sites.</p>
<p>The code would apply to all commercial buildings that have a connected load of a minimum of 100 kW or have a contract demand of 120 kVA or more. Buildings intended only for private residential purposes would not fall under the purview of the code.</p>
<p><strong>Key Highlights</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>A dedicated renewable energy generation zone would be provided in every building. This would be equivalent to at least 25 percent of the roof area or the area required for the generation of energy equivalent to 1 percent of total peak demand or the connected load of the building, whichever is less.</li>
<li>Renewable energy and solar generation zones would be free of any obstructions within their boundaries and from shadows cast by objects adjacent to them.</li>
<li>For ECBC+ buildings, the renewable energy generated would have to be at least 2 percent of the total electrical load of the building.</li>
<li>For ECBC+ star hotels with a built up area (BUA) of more than 20,000 m², resorts with a BUA greater than 12,500 m², universities with a BUA above 20,000 m², and businesses with a BUA greater than 20,000 m²; the renewable energy generated would have to be 3 percent of the total electrical load of the building.</li>
<li>For SuperECBC buildings, the renewable energy generated would have to be at least 4 percent of the total electrical load of the building.</li>
<li>For SuperECBC star hotels with a BUA greater than 20,000 m², resorts with a BUA greater than 12,500 m², universities with a BUA above 20,000 m², and businesses with a BUA greater than 20,000 m²; the renewable energy generated would have to be equal to 6 percent of the total electrical load of the building.</li>
<li>The installation of electrical vehicle (EV) charging equipment in 2 percent of all the parking spaces used by the project would be mandatory. A minimum of one EV charging station would be compulsory for every project.</li>
</ul>
<p>In cases where a dedicated renewable energy generation zone is not available due to an obstruction, the roofs would have to be either a cool roof or a vegetated roof. The compliance of ECBC+ and SuperECBC buildings would be evaluated on a case-to-case basis.</p>
<p>In June 2017, ECBC 2017 was <a href="https://mercomindia.com/energy-conservation-building-code-2017-launched/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">launched</a> by previous Minister of Power Piyush Goyal with the aim of achieving a 30-50 percent reduction in energy use by the year 2030.</p>
<p>“This draft, if it becomes policy, would be a positive one for Delhi which suffers from constant and debilitating air pollution. Many commercial buildings currently are not suitable for rooftop solar installations due to the location, shade, space availability and strength of the buildings, among other reasons. An improved building code could facilitate more solar rooftop installations in the future and consequently help alleviate Delhi’s pollution problems,” said Raj Prabhu, CEO of Mercom Capital Group. “If planned and executed well, similar building codes could be adopted all over India to facilitate rooftop solar.”</p>
