					</table>Lithium-ion batteries dominate India&#8217;s energy storage market today, but researchers and industry are also exploring alternative technologies for long-duration energy storage that could improve domestic manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported materials.
At the <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/event/mercom-india-renewables-summit-2026" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mercom India Renewables Summit 2026</a>, Nikhil Tambe, Chief Executive Officer, The Energy Consortium at the Indian Institute of Technology (<a href="https://www.iitm.ac.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IIT) Madras</a>, discussed his team&#8217;s collaboration with High Energy Batteries, which received the Research-to-Innovation Award for developing a vanadium redox flow battery system for long-duration energy storage.
The following are edited excerpts from the interview.
Could you tell us about the project that received the Mercom research-to-innovation award?
I represent the IIT Madras Energy Consortium, and we have worked on this project with High Energy Batteries, based in Tiruchirappalli.
The project involves vanadium redox flow battery technology for long-duration energy storage. The work began at IIT Madras and was subsequently developed with our industry partner into a large pilot system that is currently operational in Tiruchirappalli.
This technology is particularly relevant because it can potentially be indigenized and manufactured at scale in India. Vanadium redox flow batteries are not yet as widely known as lithium-based systems, but we believe they can create a distinct category within the energy storage market.
Why did IIT Madras choose to focus on vanadium redox flow batteries?
Our focus is on long-duration energy storage, which means storing electricity at grid scale for six, eight hours, or even longer.
This requirement has become more important as India has rapidly expanded solar, wind, and other renewable energy capacities. The challenge is no longer limited to generating renewable electricity. It is increasingly about making that electricity available when consumers and the grid need it.
Energy storage is a key part of solving that problem.
Lithium-based chemistries have gained commercial acceptance because they are widely available and can be deployed at scale. However, we also understand their limitations, particularly for longer-duration applications.
What advantages do vanadium flow batteries offer over lithium-ion batteries?
Vanadium redox flow batteries become attractive when large quantities of energy need to be stored for six to eight hours. If several hundred megawatt-hours of electricity must be stored for that duration, lithium-based systems can become prohibitively expensive. Vanadium flow batteries are better suited to such long-duration applications.
Cost is one of the main advantages. Another is the potential for domestic manufacturing. If India has to import large quantities of lithium and associated materials, the overall cost and supply chain exposure can be significant. Many of the materials required for vanadium flow batteries, including vanadium itself, are available in India.
This reduces dependence on international supply chains and improves the possibility of developing an indigenous long-duration storage ecosystem.
What other energy storage technologies is IIT Madras working on?
We are also working on zinc-air batteries. Zinc-air is a different category of technology and could be suitable for storing energy over much longer periods, potentially for several months rather than a few hours. Our group is also working on pumped water storage. These technologies serve different use cases, and no single storage technology can address every duration, application, and operating requirement.
Is this research limited to IIT Madras, or are other institutions also involved?
Research is underway at several institutions, but IIT Madras has adopted a consortium-based approach. Our model brings together industry, academia, and the government. This collaboration strengthens technical capabilities and helps move research from the laboratory toward commercial deployment.
The government is involved, while a significant share of the project funding comes from industry. Our partnership with High Energy Batteries is an example of how industry participation can help translate laboratory research into deployable, commercially relevant technology.
How soon could vanadium redox flow batteries be deployed commercially at scale?
We already have a pilot system operating in Tiruchirappalli. The objective was to understand how the technology performs when connected to a real-world application.
For mass deployment, we are looking at a timeframe of two to four years.
The principal constraint will be India&#8217;s ability to manufacture these batteries at scale. However, recent energy storage tenders have begun to include vanadium redox flow technology alongside lithium-based systems.
We are also seeing vanadium-based systems participate successfully in commercial bids and secure projects. This gives us confidence in the technology’s commercial prospects.
How important is industry support in taking such technologies to market?
Industry support is essential. Research institutions can develop and validate technologies, but commercialization requires manufacturing capability, capital, supply chains, and deployment experience.
Industry collaboration enables us to test technologies under practical conditions and move them beyond the laboratory stage.
The renewable energy sector frequently cites a shortage of skilled workers. How serious is this gap?
The skill gap is real. One reason is the simultaneous emergence of new energy technologies. Solar may be considered a relatively mature technology, but it continues to undergo innovation, particularly in large-scale manufacturing and advanced cell technologies.
At the same time, the industry is expanding into energy storage, green hydrogen, green ammonia, and several other emerging segments.
All these industries require a large pool of specialized workforce. Without sufficient workforce development, different clean energy segments will compete for the same limited talent.
We have always said that today&#8217;s students will become tomorrow&#8217;s leaders in the renewable energy sector. They must be trained with that perspective.
Our consortium provides students with industry-relevant exposure and practical experience before they graduate.
Does IIT Madras offer dedicated programs for renewable energy professionals?
IIT Madras offers a master&#8217;s degree in energy systems and sustainable energy systems. In addition, we conduct several certification programs. We have also partnered with global institutions to establish a green energy academy that will provide technical training and certification courses.
These programs are not limited to students. Working professionals can also participate.
The certification courses range from two weeks to six months, while the degree program runs for approximately 18 months. Participants completing the certification programs receive credentials issued by IIT Madras.
How do you assess India&#8217;s progress in renewable energy compared with other countries?
India has been proactive in setting targets and supporting them through fiscal measures and implementation policies. Several countries consider themselves leaders in renewable energy, but they continue to face delays in emerging areas such as green hydrogen.
India, by comparison, has made allocations, established targets, and continued refining those targets based on market developments.
There is a consistent effort to bring costs down and scale deployment. Despite the challenges, India&#8217;s renewable energy deployment has broadly kept pace with expectations.
What is the outlook for biofuels in India?
Biofuels are already moving into the implementation stage. India has achieved the 20% blending target, and the government has now indicated greater ambitions. The next challenge is large-scale deployment and wider commercial adoption. The country has demonstrated that it can produce biofuels at scale, and the focus must now shift toward expanding their use across sectors.
Will coal continue to coexist with renewable energy in the near future?
Coal will remain relevant in the near term, but its use may evolve. One area of research is converting coal into useful fuels or chemicals instead of burning it directly. This could allow the country to use its coal resources without producing emissions through conventional combustion.
Another opportunity involves repurposing closed or inactive coal mines. These sites offer substantial land and infrastructure that could support new energy technologies and other innovative applications.
IIT Madras is working with the Ministry of Coal and has established a Center for Sustainable Energy with support from Coal India. Similar initiatives are also being pursued at other IITs.
India must examine how its existing natural resources and industrial assets can support the energy transition, rather than treating it as a simple replacement of one energy source with another.

India Can Build a Domestic Long-Duration Energy Storage Industry: Interview

					</table>India’s renewable energy sector is entering a new phase as more developers opt for combining solar and wind projects with energy storage to leverage benefits like improved power availability and grid stability. As challenges like curtailment hamper renewables generation, battery energy and pumped storage have become key for efficient utilization of solar and wind projects.
On the sidelines of the <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/event/mercom-india-renewables-summit-2026" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mercom India Renewables Summit 2026</a>, Mercom India spoke with Khalid Nadeem, Chief Operating Officer at <a href="https://www.sael.co/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SAEL</a>, about the growing role of battery and pumped storage, the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers List-II  mandate for solar cells, and the policy support required to sustain renewable energy investments.
Edited excerpts from the interview:
Could you tell us about SAEL and its future plans?
SAEL is an integrated renewable energy company with operations spread across solar independent power production, waste-to-energy projects, and solar manufacturing, including cells and modules.
We have approximately 3.5 GW of solar module manufacturing capacity. We are also developing an integrated 5 GW solar cell and module manufacturing facility near Noida.
On the project development side, we have an operational and under-construction renewable energy portfolio of approximately 8 GW.
Renewable energy curtailment has emerged as a concern in several states. How can the industry address this issue?
Excess renewable energy that would otherwise be curtailed must be stored and supplied during peak demand hours.
Along with storage, states must explore shifting certain categories of electricity demand from nighttime to daytime, when solar generation is available.
A combination of load shifting and energy storage should help address curtailment and stabilize the system over the next two to three years.

Will storage become an essential part of renewable energy projects over the next few years?
Storage will have to become an integral part of renewable energy development because renewable power is intermittent and  electricity demand varies throughout the day.
Solar projects generate electricity during daylight hours, but the demand may peak even during evenings. Storage allows electricity generated during periods of low demand to be shifted to peak-demand hours.
There are two ways to address this mismatch. The first is to move electricity consumption to periods when renewable generation is available. Several state governments are already working on shifting nighttime demand to daytime hours so that more solar power can be consumed directly.
The second option is to store excess generation and discharge it during peak hours. Both measures must be adopted together to improve utilization of renewable energy.
What role will storage play in improving grid stability and flexibility?
Storage can be critical to supplying electricity when demand is at its highest. Firm and dispatchable renewable energy projects and peak power supply arrangements cannot be developed using renewable generation alone because developers cannot control when the solar or wind resource will be available.
A solar project will generate power during the day. If electricity demand rises in the evening, ample storage is required to shift that power to nighttime.
Considerable investment is already flowing into battery energy storage systems, and this segment will become increasingly important over the next two to five years.
How important will pumped storage be alongside battery energy storage?
Pumped storage will play a major role, particularly for applications with requirements for long durations.
Battery energy storage was initially considered more suitable for shorter durations of two to three hours. For storage durations beyond four hours, pumped storage is more economical and practical.
As more pumped storage capacity becomes operational, it will provide substantial support for long-duration renewable energy integration.
What is your assessment of the implementation of ALMM List-II for solar cells?
ALMM List-II is a positive step and will support the growth of domestic solar cell manufacturing.
However, the cell manufacturing capacity that the companies had committed to commission by 2026 has not  progressed at the expected pace. The industry might take up to a year to meet the current domestic cell demand.
Module manufacturing involves a straightforward assembly operation, while the production of cell manufacturing is more technology intensive. This is one of the reasons behind the delay in expansion of domestic cell capacity.
There is a wide gap between India’s module and cell manufacturing capacities. How could this affect the industry?
India is likely to face an oversupply of solar modules. As is the case with any industry experiencing rapid capacity expansion, this could eventually result in consolidation, mergers, and acquisitions.
Standalone module manufacturers that have not integrated backward into cell manufacturing could face challenges in the short term.
A large share of the new cell manufacturing capacity is expected to be used internally by integrated manufacturers. Only limited quantities may be available for sale in the open market, which could create sourcing difficulties for standalone module manufacturers.
What policy changes would you like to see for energy storage and renewable energy development?
Policy consistency is more important than introducing frequent new measures.
Renewable energy projects involve substantial capital investment, and their expected returns are calculated at the time of development. Changes to deviation settlement mechanisms, grid-injection requirements, or other operating conditions after a project has been commissioned can affect its commercial viability.
Once a project is awarded and developed, its regulatory framework should remain stable.
Why is a long-term renewable energy demand outlook important for manufacturers and developers?
Majority of the investment in domestic renewable energy manufacturing has occurred over the past two years. Companies investing in cells, ingots, wafers, modules, and balance of system components need visibility on demand for at least the next 10 years.
The government should provide clarity on the market beyond 2030, including the expected annual capacity additions and potential new opportunities for manufacturers and developers.
A clear projection of approximately 75 GW to 80 GW of annual renewable energy demand would help investors, manufacturers, and project developers plan their capacity additions more effectively.
Can India sustain its current renewable energy growth over the next five years?
India has continued to add substantial renewable energy capacity despite several constraints. However, future growth could be affected by transmission limitations, deviation settlement regulations, land acquisition, and other project development challenges.
Large renewable energy projects require significant land parcels. The government can support continued growth by simplifying land acquisition and providing a clearer long-term market outlook.
Policies addressing land availability and defining the expected demand trajectory over the next decade will help manufacturers and developers make informed investment decisions.

Solar Module Industry May See Consolidation Due to Oversupply: Interview

					</table>India has made significant headway in expanding its solar module and cell manufacturing capacities over the years. However, a globally competitive manufacturing ecosystem also requires a robust domestic supply chain for balance-of-system (BoS) and bill-of-materials (BoM) components, such as junction boxes, connectors, cables, and aluminum frames.
According to Srivatsa, General Manager, Sales and Technical Operations at <a href="https://www.genxpv.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GenX PV</a>, the biggest advantages of India’s domestic manufacturing ecosystem are shorter lead times and easy access to technical support. Additional financial and policy support could pave the way for a scale-up in the domestic solar component manufacturing ecosystem.
In an interview on the sidelines of the <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/event/mercom-india-renewables-summit-2026" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mercom India Renewables Summit 2026</a> on July 1 and 2 in New Delhi, Srivatsa shared his insights on localization, backward integration, domestic manufacturing, policy support, and the future of India&#8217;s solar component ecosystem.
Edited excerpts from the interview:
India has made significant progress in module and cell manufacturing. How important is it now to strengthen the domestic manufacturing of BoS and BoM components?
If you look at the industry today, India has installed module manufacturing capacity of more than 200 GW. With around 30 GW of operational capacity, cell manufacturing is catching up rapidly, and several new projects have been announced.
For junction boxes, India already has around 120-150 GW of domestic manufacturing capacity. We are seeing a clear shift from imported products to domestically manufactured components.
One of the biggest advantages of manufacturing in India is shorter lead times and readily available technical support. If any issue arises in the field, our engineering teams can visit the site and resolve it much faster than imported suppliers can.
GenX PV has expanded from manufacturing junction boxes and connectors into aluminum frames. What drove this backward integration strategy?
Backward integration has always been part of our long-term strategy.
We started with junction boxes and subsequently integrated plastic molding. We are now moving towards cable manufacturing. Over the coming years, we plan to expand to diode manufacturing. Our objective is to establish an integrated manufacturing facility where all these components are produced under one roof.
We identified aluminum frames as another opportunity because domestic manufacturing capacity in this segment is relatively limited. We plan to establish a complete manufacturing chain, from aluminum billets and extrusion to finished module frames.
Backward integration improves cost competitiveness while providing better control over quality and delivery timelines.
Today, the pricing difference between domestic products and Chinese imports has narrowed considerably. The larger concern is product dumping rather than manufacturing competitiveness.

Do you believe that India can localize the entire solar components ecosystem within the next few years?
Absolutely. For junction boxes alone, localization has already reached around 50% to 70%.
The remaining components, particularly diodes, will require additional investment and time. Over the next two years, we expect manufacturers to continue integrating backward and substantially increase localization across the value chain.
How competitive are domestically manufactured components compared to Chinese products?
From a manufacturing perspective, we are already competitive with Chinese suppliers.
The challenge arises when products are dumped into the Indian market at artificially low prices.That is where additional policy support could help domestic manufacturers compete on a more level-playing field.
What kind of policy support would benefit component manufacturers?
Junction boxes are among the few component categories for which policy protection remains limited. Currently, they attract only a 7.5% Basic Customs Duty (BCD), unlike components such as encapsulants, backsheets, or solar glass, where stronger protective measures already exist.
Additional policy support would encourage further domestic investment and accelerate manufacturing scale-up.
Module technologies continue to evolve toward TOPCon and HJT. How is GenX PV adapting to these technology transitions?
Our product portfolio has evolved with module technologies. We currently manufacture junction boxes supporting current ratings from 20 A to 35 A, covering conventional monocrystalline modules, TOPCon, M10, G12, HJT, and other advanced technologies.
We are also prepared for higher system voltages. Our products are already designed for applications up to 2,000 VDC, reflecting the way the industry is moving beyond the traditional 1,500 VDC standard.
Continuous investment in research and development enables us to keep up with evolving market requirements rather than reacting after technologies are commercialized.
Beyond financial incentives, what additional reforms would strengthen India&#8217;s component manufacturing industry?
A key area is the mandatory use of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)-certified DC cables. While several large projects already specify BIS-certified cables, currently there is no universal requirement across the industry.
Making BIS-certified cables mandatory would improve product quality, strengthen domestic manufacturing, and create a more uniform market for Indian suppliers.
How do you see India&#8217;s BoS component manufacturing industry evolving over the next few years?
The industry is expanding rapidly. As annual solar installations continue to increase, more domestic manufacturers are entering the market and building local production capacity.
Although component manufacturing still has room for growth, we expect domestic participation to increase significantly over the next two to five years.
How is the relationship between module manufacturers and domestic component suppliers evolving?
Initially, there was considerable resistance because module manufacturers had relied on imported components for many years.
Changing established procurement practices takes time.
However, once manufacturers began using domestically produced components and observed their field performance, their confidence gradually improved.
Being an Indian manufacturer gives us an important advantage. We can provide technical assistance, engineering support, and after-sales service whenever required.
Our products comply with all relevant IEC and BIS standards, undergo additional in-house testing, and have performed reliably in the field over the past five years. That performance has helped build customer confidence.
How do you ensure your products can withstand India&#8217;s diverse climatic conditions?
Every junction box is designed to operate under a wide range of environmental conditions. We conduct extensive temperature cycling and environmental testing to ensure reliable operation regardless of whether the modules are installed in Rajasthan, Karnataka, or any other climatic region.
These qualification tests ensure long-term reliability under real-world operating conditions.
What are GenX PV&#8217;s growth plans over the next five years?
Our primary focus is backward integration.
Today, we have nearly 50 GW of junction box manufacturing capacity. Plastic molding has already been integrated, cable manufacturing will commence shortly, and diode manufacturing will follow.
All these operations will eventually be consolidated into an integrated manufacturing facility in Bengaluru.
We are also expanding into aluminum frame manufacturing. Beyond that, we will evaluate additional diversification opportunities as the market evolves.
Do you believe India can establish a fully integrated domestic solar manufacturing ecosystem?
Yes, I believe we are already well on our way.
Most of the BoM components required for junction box manufacturing are already produced domestically.
The remaining challenge is scaling the capacity to meet growing demand.
Consistent government policy, without major changes or reversals, will enable manufacturers to invest with confidence and accelerate the development of a fully integrated domestic manufacturing ecosystem.
